The Tree of Knowledge

The “Tree of Knowledge,” also known as the “Yum Yum Tree,” is a historically significant fig tree located in Wickham, Newcastle, NSW. This tree has served as a central gathering place for the community over the years.

The tree’s origins are linked to the Hannell family, prominent figures in Newcastle’s history. Mary Hannell is believed to have planted a series of fig trees around 1870 to provide shade in the area, with the “Tree of Knowledge” being the last surviving of these nine trees.

Historically, the tree has been a focal point for various community activities and events. Notably, the last recorded corroboree, an Indigenous gathering, was held near this site in the early 1900s.

In contemporary times, the park surrounding the tree continues to host community events, such as the “Ride2Work Day” community breakfast.

The “Tree of Knowledge” stands as a symbol of Wickham’s rich cultural heritage and remains a cherished landmark for both residents and visitors.
